KICKING HUNGER TOGETHER
In 2025, Minnesota food shelves reported more than 9 million visits – 3 million of which were children, setting a record for the fourth consecutive year. Rising food costs, the impact of federal immigration enforcement, and changes to SNAP have driven this unprecedented demand. Additionally, when school is out, food shelf demand peaks while donations often dip to their lowest levels.
OYH’s Summer Challenge bridges this gap by increasing awareness of local food shelves and harnessing the power of collective giving through matching grant opportunities. This financial aid assists food shelves in generating extra funds during the summer’s slower donation periods, enabling them to sustain their support for local communities.
Last year, 83 food shelves from across Minnesota participated in the challenge, collectively raising $2.4 million to keep shelves stocked and Minnesotans fed!
Get Involved – Kicking Hunger Together!
Inspired by this summer’s World Cup, this year’s Summer Challenge theme is Kicking Hunger Together!
- Follow OYH on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to like, follow and share Summer Challenge updates, and join one of our virtual challenges!
- Host a “Game Day BBQ” or “Scoring Meals for Families” event to collect food and/or monetary donations for a participating food shelf.
- Create a World Cup Bracket competition. Winner donates entry fees to the food shelf of their choice.
- Partner with Open Your Heart this July by donating to and increasing our $75,000 matching incentive.
Let’s Kick Hunger Together — Give a Gift Today.
Every dollar strengthens food shelves during the toughest months of the year.
