It’s that time of year again. The Minnesota State Fair opened its gates last week, each day more green leaves give way to yellow and red, and as of today most schools are back in session.
Like you, Open Your Heart believes all Minnesotans should have access to food, shelter and safety. This is why Open Your Heart partners with schools and education outreach programs. Education has the power to change lives by lifting individuals and families out of generational poverty and interrupting the harmful and stressful cycles of housing and food insecurity. Supporting students has proven to be a key factor in breaking cycles of poverty.
Because of your compassion and care, this past year Open Your Heart provided funding for:
18 Minneapolis College Scholarships for students experiencing housing insecurity,
The purchase of a commercial freezer at Concordia University’s Food Pantry for students experiencing food insecurity,
54 students at Grace House of Itasca County to participate in school programs, receive personal hygiene products, and fund technology necessary in today’s modern classrooms,
And, targeted support and essential resources for students identified as Homeless/Highly Mobile (HHM) in Intermediate School District 287 in Hennepin County.
As Latrena Plunkett, Minneapolis College Student and OYH Scholarship recipient, said, “This support means so much to me as I continue my studies at Minneapolis College and work towards becoming a substance use disorder counselor rooted in compassion and community healing. The scholarship lifts a financial burden and affirms that I am on the right path. Thank you for investing in students like me and for opening your heart to our journeys.”
We echo the words of Latrena: Your support of Open Your Heart makes a difference in the lives of Minnesotans. Thank you for opening your heart!
